UTT Spotlight: Ayhika Mukherjee

Ayhika Mukherjee, a 26-year-old table tennis player from Naihati, West Bengal, has been making waves in the international table tennis circuit. Born on June 10, 1997, Ayhika who is currently ranked 86 in the world, plays with a right-handed shakehand grip and is well-known for her defensive and patient approach to the game.


Ayhika's career has been on an upward trajectory since her debut. She was part of the Indian team for the 2018 Asian Games and the 2022 Asian Games. 


Ayhika's most notable achievement came at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, where she and her doubles partner Sutirtha Mukherjee won a historic bronze medal for India in women's doubles. The duo made headlines by defeating the world-champion Chinese pair of Chen Meng and Wang Yidi in the quarterfinals.


In recognition of her outstanding performances, Ayhika was conferred with the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2023.
Known for her defensive style and unique anti-type rubber, Ayhika has been working on incorporating more attacking elements into her game. "I discovered that I can attack even better... actually my game is defensive in style, I try to block and my rubber is different, it's anti-type so I like to trick and play. And now combining attack with it is making my game open up," Ayhika shared in one of her recent interviews.


Her newfound confidence in attacking has paid off, as evidenced by her upset win over world No. 26 Lily Zhang, a significant achievement for a player ranked 135th in the world during the Ultimate Table Tennis Season 4.


Ayhika also stole the headlines at the 2024 World Table Tennis Team Championships, where she stunned the world no. 1 player from China, Sun Yingsha. This victory set the tone for India's impressive run in the tournament, which saw them reach the Round of 16 and eventually secure an Olympic berth through the rankings quota.


Ayhika has been part of two seasons of Ultimate Table Tennis, which has provided her with the perfect opportunity to challenge herself against top international players and coaches, allowing her to push the boundaries of her game. With her fearless attitude and determination, Ayhika Mukherjee has witnessed a rapid rise in the world of table tennis and has been inducted as part of the Indian Women’s team representing in the Paris Olympics.
