Lagos, June 24, 2024: Indian table tennis players delivered a remarkable performance at the recently concluded WTT Contender Lagos 2024 event, securing three titles in a historic day for the sport in the country.
In the women's singles final, Sreeja Akula made history by becoming the first Indian to win a WTT Contender singles title. The 25-year-old, who is part of India's team for the Paris 2024 Olympics, triumphed over China's 16-year-old Yijie Ding with a score of 4-1 (10-12, 11-9, 11-6, 11-8, 11-6). Akula's journey to the final included a hard-fought 3-2 victory over her compatriot and Tokyo Olympian Sutirtha Mukherjee in the semi-finals.
Akula continued her winning streak in the women's doubles event, partnering with Archana Kamath. The Indian duo defeated their compatriots Yashaswini Ghorpade and Diya Chitale 3-0 (11-9, 11-6, 12-10) to clinch the title.
The Indian success extended to the men's doubles final, where Harmeet Desai and Manav Thakkar defeated the Nigerian pair of Olajide Omotayo and Azeez Solanke 3-0 (11-8, 11-9, 11-8). This marked the first time an Indian men's doubles pair won a title at a Contender event.
All four Indian title winners—Sreeja Akula, Archana Kamath, Harmeet Desai, and Manav Thakkar—are part of the Indian team for the Paris Olympics. It was a day to remember for Indian table tennis, with the country's players showcasing their dominance on the international stage ahead of the upcoming Paris Olympic Games.
