14 Apr, 2018

Manika Batra and Mouma Das began their Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Women’s Doubles Table Tennis campaign on April 12, 2018 against Sri Lanka. The Indian duo of Batra and Das believed in themselves and were in their element right from the start as they kept marching on with vigour and valour right through till the final match of the Women’s Doubles category. Unfortunately, they succumbed to a defeat in the hands of Singaporean duo of Tianwei Feng and Mengyu Yu.

Batra and Das directly played the Round of 16 against the Sri Lankan pair of Hansani Kapugeekiyana and Ishara Madurangi. They crushed their opponent 3 - 0 and cruised into the quarterfinals.

England’s Tin-tin Ho and Maria Tsaptinos were the next opponents for Batra and Das. The result did not differ much from their first game of their campaign as they eased past the British duo 3 - 1. The dynamic Indian duo booked their berths in the final four of the Commonwealth Games, Gold Coast 2018.

Batra and Das had to lock horns with the Malaysian pair of Ying Ho and Karen Lyne. The Indian Women paddler duo did not loose a game in the semifinal as they registered a 3 – 0 victory over their Malaysian counterparts.

The Gold medal match between Batra/Das and Singaporean pair of Tianwei Feng and Mengyu Yu ended up being pretty much one sided as the Indian Women paddlers suffered a 3 – 0 defeat and bowed out of the tournament with a silver medal at the end.

The pair thus created history by winning the first ever Silver medal in the Table Tennis Women’s Doubles category for India.
