India’s Women’s Team strike Gold at Gold Coast.
08 Apr, 2018

As the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games commenced down under, the Indian Women's Table Tennis Team had their eyes set on the Gold despite failing to grab it in previous editions. Singapore had a unique feat of clinching the Gold medal since the inception of the Commonwealth Games and the Indian women were looking to break that jinx.

In their quest for Gold, India started off their campaign by facing Sri Lanka in the group stages. It took just three games for the Indian eves to take the tie, as the Lankans found the Indians too hot to handle. As a result, the Indian women's team won the encounter 3-0 and without dropping a single game.

The second match in the group stage against Wales was a tricky affair as the Welsh team made India work hard and fight for each point. After winning the first two rubbers of the tie, Anna Harsey and Charlotte Carey won the doubles match which witnessed a see-saw battle between the two teams. In the fourth rubber of the match, Madhurika Patkar kept her cool as she signed off with a win, thereby taking the tie for India as they topped their group.

In the Quarterfinals, India faced Malaysia, with the winners set to grab a spot in the Semifinals. For this match, India fielded its best paddlers in the form of Manika Batra, Madhurika Patkar, and Mouma Das, to keep alive their quest for Gold. The trio didn't disappoint at all as they blanked the Malaysians 3-0 and progressed to the last four.

With the winner standing a chance for a shot at the Gold medal, a lot was at stake when India locked horns with England in the crucial Semifinal match. Even though Manika Batra, Madhurika Patkar and the doubles pair of Mouma Das and Madhurika Patkar lost one game each in their respective matches, India rounded off a comfortable 3-0 victory over the English women.

Singapore, the defending Commonwealth champions, were the only obstacle between India and Gold. But despite being the underdogs, team India made a flying start to the match, as Manika Batra defeated world no. 4, Tianwei Feng, three games to one. Despite losing the second match, India upped the ante and did the impossible by winning the next two matches and thereby taking the Gold medal with a 3-1 victory.

With this victory, India became only the second nation to win a Gold in the Women's Table Tennis Team event in the Commonwealth Games history. Kudos to the girls who made it possible and made the country proud.
