Having bagged two medals, already, in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, Sharath Kamal was determined to add one more to his illustrious collection when he stepped out in the Oxenford arena for his Bronze Medal match in the Men's Singles category.
India's Kamal was up against England's Samuel Walker with the winner taking a place in the podium alongside the Gold and Silver medalists. The Indian had to fend a strong challenge in the Round of 32 match where he faced Javen Choong of Malaysia. After registering a win over the Malaysian, Sharath more or less had a smooth run through to the Semifinals. In the semis, he faced Nigeria's Aruna Quadri who comfortably beat the Indian 4-0.
In the Bronze Medal match, he faced a 22-year old Walker from England who had tasted victory at the world stage by winning a Bronze in the 2016 World Team Championships held in Malaysia.
Given Sharath's experience, he started the game on a positive note and took the first two games to take a lead and put the youngster under some pressure. But Walker fought back to take the third game to make it 2-1.
But Sharath was up for the challenge as he took the fourth game 11-6. The fifth game went down to the wire as Walker fought back hard to take it to deuce. Keeping a cool head, Sharath wrapped up the game and match by taking two straight points and added yet another medal to his tally.
With this, Sharath ended his 2018 CWG campaign with three medals. Having won a Gold in the Men's team event, Silver in Men's Doubles, a Bronze in the Men's Singles was a perfect icing on the cake for the Indian table tennis maestro.
